THE MORE YOU KNOW

  • PEN America is a leading advocacy organization dedicated to defending free expression and fighting book bans in the United States. We think PEN is a great resource to stay current on this issue and learn more about potential censorship affecting your community. 
  • Understand what’s at stake. The American Library Association found that over the past two years, most book challenges and bans in public libraries targeted books authored or about people of color or LGBTQ+ people.

  • Familiarize yourself with The Miller Test, the test the US Supreme Court uses for determining whether or not a material is obscene or offensive.

  • Contact your Legislator and let them know you oppose HB1069 and book removals in Florida’s public schools. Find your House Representative here, and your Senator here. Remind your elected official that 80% of Americans oppose book bans. 
  • Discover what you’re missing! The New York Public Library has a Teen Banned Book Club that is open to all and offers free digital access to challenged or banned young adult titles.
